Every day is chaos. Software is tedious and slows down efficiency. Management within hospitals lack training on how to manage people. Field leadership varies from region to region but lately feels very disconnected with what the day to day work flow is in clinic.

Pay is not enough for the amount of work you do-fill scripts, answering never ending phone calls, triage pets over the phone, continuously rearrange schedule due to online scheduler system allowing people to schedule ridiculous things, clean rooms, being the messenger for techs/doctorsCorporate ruined this company. They set unrealistic expectations for all the employees and Drs. I used to love working here but corporate's greed is pushing everyone out. They want us to see a ridiculous amount of pets and don't allow us any control on them schedule so we're constantly overbooked and getting complaints because we can provide quality care.
Pets Aren’t Chocolate Bars: A Sales Company Disguised as Veterinary Medicine

The biggest problem is that this company seems to prioritize sales and profit over employees and, at times, even over the health and well-being of the pets. Clinics are expected to see too many pets with too few people, leaving staff rushed, overwhelmed, and regularly staying late just to get everything done. Then, somehow, Mars is upset that employees are staying late while simultaneously demanding that clinics see even more pets. Which is it? You cannot demand more appointments, more productivity, more Wellness Plans, and more responsibilities while understaffing clinics and then be angry when people cannot finish on time. The constant pressure to push Wellness Plans is especially disgusting in this economy, with prices and the cost of living already going up. Owners say no, yet employees are still expected to keep pushing, and raises are tied more to how many plans someone sells than to skill, improvement, experience, or quality of work. That tells employees exactly what the company values. Care and good medicine should be the priority — they should be the entire point of veterinary medicine — but it does not feel that way here. Mars has started to make veterinary medicine feel like just another product line. Pets are not chocolate bars. They are living beings, not sales opportunities. Practice managers are expected to manage the clinic while also filling in for practically every other position when staffing is short, all while dealing with pressure from higher-ups about numbers. I've personally seen a doctor who provided top-notch medicine start pushing Wellness Plans more because the higher-ups were constantly on the practice manager's back about sales. That is how badly the sales culture can bleed into actual medical care. The burnout is real, too. I've seen genuinely great, positive, hardworking technicians just give up. Some staff are struggling mentally to the point that they no longer want to be in veterinary medicine at all. And the turnover tells the real story: veterinarians, practice managers, vet techs, and assistants are all leaving. When people at every level are continuously walking out the door, that should be a massive red flag. But despite all of this turnover, the answer is always more, more, and more — more pets, more sales, more productivity, more pressure, without enough staff, pay, or support. People are burning out and leaving a profession they once loved, and that should tell leadership everything it needs to know.

Having to deal with euthanasia is the worst feeling. Low pay and yet expected to do an overwhelming amount of work on your own. Raising prices, but not wages.

As someone who enjoys a lot of variety in their work, I was able to partner with my practice manager to allow me to cross-train every function that the hospital could need. (Client service, Medical assistance & Labratory technician functions, Surgical support, Animal dentistry.) This was a great choice for me as a neurodivergent person.
Cons
After 3 years of working there, I established myself as a valuable employee, only to make 16.50 per hour by October 2023. I was unfamiliar at the time with how to ask for a raise to match my skills, and assumed if the topic hadn't been approached, it just wasn't going to happen, so I left.
