Great job

09/23/2024 - Greenville, NC

Pros

Not difficult, good management, good pay.

Cons

The hours can be inconsistent. Not a huge deal.

I would not recommend it.

09/25/2024 - Louisville, KY

Pros

Pay is good compared to most retailers.Working with the animals can be very fun and rewarding.

Cons

Horrible corporate structure and terrible work life balance. Expect to work 8 - 11 days in a row from time to time due to inadequate staffing.

DO NOT WORK HERE

07/25/2024 - Monroeville, PA

Pros

literally just the money, and is nice seeing customers bring in pets

Cons

general manager at this location is horrible. puts herself before employees. turnover rate is extremely high because she mistreats employees. makes employees do all the work while she sits in her office on social media. has no empathy or sympathy for employees and only cares about numbers not about employee or animal welfare. she doesn't do her job instead she has others do it. she is spiteful, has a horrible attitude. offers positions to employees without intention to give them the opportunity. lies often. talks about employees behind their backs to other employees. double standard, will write employees up for being late but shows up almost 20 minutes late every day without giving herself points. assigns unrealistic amounts of tasks for the day and overworks employees but refuses to help employees complete tasks. will not help when short staffed, expects employees to work more hours to cover shifts instead of coming in to cover as the GM's responsibility. tells employees "not to bother her" and to find another higher up employee to solve manager problems (she is the highest manager). Will approve her own PTO (takes a week or more of PTO every month) but wont approve other employees time off even if its weeks or months in advance. HR has been involved several times but nothing has happened because of how long she has been with the company. has said to employees that we "cant be friends" and does not like to see us conversing or being friendly off the clock or on the clock. does not want healthy work environment and ensured to make it hostile. decline transferring employees to different departments for her own benefit. will make employees change their schedule to better fit her schedule. will schedule you outside of your availability. does not communicate with employees, extremely assertive/dominant/controlling when talking to customers and employees and micromanages to an impossible degree. talks to employees in a condescending manor. When I was training i was being trained by another low level employee and i did not see her for the entire time i was training but expects new employees to know everything and also had me train an employee when i was only a few days new to the job. she doesn't know how to take responsibility for problems she causes and refuses to take blame. the entire grooming studio quit because she was being mean and mistreating them. (this is not the first time we have lost an entire department due to her behavior) company encourages a "safe space" but with this GM around it is not a safe space. when people realize they work with her they are less likely to come in and more likely to call off because of the way she treats employees. she plays favorites and will let herself and other employees leave earlier than scheduled but if a "non-favorite" employee is sick on the job she refuses to let them go home. will force sick employees to come in even if they are contagious. she wont work a 12 hour shift but will force employees to. she also inputs the schedule 3 weeks in advance and refuses to let employees switch shifts when something comes up (medical emergency) and will force them to call off instead of working with employees to ensure their life is taken care of and the store at the same time. an employee who was on crutches was expected to sweep up an entire bag of dog food alone with no help and it took 2 other managers to convince the GM to let the employee sit down even though a doctors note was submitted saying she needed to keep her foot elevated (by sitting).

Don't Expect Full Time

07/26/2024 - null

Pros

You learn a lot about animals from guests and certain peers.

Cons

Unsafe environment (due to guests), animals aren't cared for properly because of corporate regulations (most employees know how to care for the animals but policies prevent good care), they say they will give you full time but never do unless you're a manager, and pay sucks.

Great employer

07/30/2024 - Fairlawn, OH

Pros

this is a great employer

Cons

the employer could be greater

I don’t like how pets are treated

07/24/2024 - Montebello, CA

Pros

No paying for gas easy work if you know what you’re doing

Cons

Customers are very rude and condescending, long hours and sometimes no lunch, worked for Vetco poor cats left to be exposed in middle of isle while people walk their dogs around treatment services. Some doctors hired don’t know how to get blood and pets would get poked and poked just to refuse the service in the end. They made us sell things to clients that were really necessary for their pet like fecal test bc they wanted to make a certain quota. We got punished and wrote up if we made our manager look bad and we didn’t get rewards or bonus.

Review

07/02/2024 - Longview, WA

Pros

Awesome pets, co-workers, and people

Cons

Not enough payroll, they expect high standards with no hours. Animals come first, then brand standards drop. You raise brand standards then animal care is not good enough.

Chasing the wind

07/13/2024 - Grand Junction, CO

Pros

You become well educated / professional on how to read metrics and how to read metrics on old software…. Like reading and old book. It’s a good place to earn the title manager and a good place to start your management career. But be ready to have to learn new skills somewhere else. It’s mangers for beginners. You become very acquainted with animal care and the benefits are great especially if you want to go into the veterinary industry.

Cons

Stores that are remote are often measured at the same standard as a metro area store, making the goals unattainable. Hence no bonus. Stores in remote areas are stuck in the 80s without a remodel. Vintage is fun but when competition makes it lucrative to shop at a nice new stores they are leaving themselves in the dust and expecting the team to somehow pull sales out of the air. I still don’t know what HR does…. Or LP. Theft is through the roof and HR complaints vanish. Also a lot of frequent change in upper management levels. The computer based learning videos are all outdated and they know it and still make you do them causing you to waste labor hours on them.

LOVE TO SEE IT! Petco is one of the only ways to make retail fun-ish

07/24/2024 - New York, NY

Pros

Cons

not great money, stressful, customers can be rude

Fantasmo Leadership for Happy Employees

07/15/2024 - Shorewood, IL

Pros

Management is very observant and quickly notices the positive changes I made to help the store thrive and they made every effort in their power to compensate me for it fairly. Within 3 months, I got 4 raises and 2 promotions, a brand new self-chosen pair of work shoes, gas vouchers, pizza parties, etc. when they noticed that the store was mostly only hitting every single one of their goals only on the days that I worked and during the hours I was clocked in. They verbally announced their appreciation as well as giving me additional compensation and incentives to continue helping the business thrive. When issues did arise, management was fair and professional in addressing their concerns as well. They really actually care about the people who work here and try to treat employees as family.

Cons

Sometimes I had to handled sick and/or deceased animals. Sometimes, needed assistance came a little too late or policies were slightly too strict, especially when extenuating circumstances are brought to light.

07/24/2024 - Kinston, NC

Cons

07/26/2024 - Englewood, CO

Pros

Good core co-workers and customers

Cons

A bad GM could make it miserable
