Petco Reviews

Good commission but management prioritises sales over staff

08/29/2026 - Porter Ranch, CA

Pros

Commission and tips are nice

Cons

Management doesn’t listen to the needs of groomers and they only care about sales and will work you dry

Great spot to build

08/28/2026 - San Diego, CA

Pros

great place to work overall welcoming

Cons

salary could be better and growth

They train you then abandon you

08/24/2026 - Las Vegas, NV

Pros

Has a program that teaches you how to groom

Cons

Sucks the life out of you. Tries to force more and more dogs on you, rarely backs you up and sets stupid rules to make your job harder.

Learned good skills, but toxic management and disrespect was outrageous!

08/23/2026 - Clackamas, OR

Pros

Learned a lot about animal health and applied it! Acquired some great info I still use about the ingredients in animal food! I learned how to read the labels. They had a good, clean system for the animals that passed away.

Cons

I was there for 2 months. I take a lot of pride in what I do. I can't believe I quit as quickly as I did, it's not something I believe in. The utter disrespect towards workers from Petco management was disgusting. I dealt with it too long! They literally mocked and sassed me like teenagers would. I had a dead, little black rat waved in my face from the GM. It was when I was assisting a customer, right in front of that man. They believed that doing things on a timer was more important that taking the extra time it may take to do the job right. I quit (with a notice making it clear why) after something in the stock room sparked the fire alarm. No fire. They didn't take the animals out or care to. I expressed my care about the animals. I wanted a procedure for them in the fire situation and advocated for that in the best way younger me could. Seeing those birds scared in that situation hurt me. No regard in any way from anyone there, not even the big corporate bosses! Seriously NOT OK! I gave them my all - animals, fellow employees, Managers and customers.

Not Recommend.

Pros

it's a paycheck, keeps you busy.

Cons

Management, Animal welfare, pay, employee well being.

It's fine, could be worse, could be a whole lot better

08/19/2026 - Beaverton, OR

Pros

legal protection, guaranteed pay, PTO, and sick time, policies that allow you to turn difficult dogs away, preexisting clientele, supplies products, pays for tool sharpening, good store managers can protect you from a lot of corporate's stupid demands

Cons

policies that force you to turn difficult dogs away, upper management has no idea what they're doing and have never worked in salons, discounts that affect your income, constant push for upselling, constant additions of new tasks by management despite already being overburdened, products supplied are poor quality, getting the salon maintenance is like pulling teeth

Flexibilidad y retos interesantes, pero falta de planeación

08/17/2026 - Querétaro, Querétaro

Pros

Flexibilidad de horarios, retos interesantes, buenas compensaciones

Cons

Falta de planeación, mucha demanda

Good job overall, but pay could improve

08/17/2026 - null

Pros

It was a good job over all.

Cons

The pay could have been better at the time.

This shouldn’t be your first choice.

08/14/2026 - null

Pros

- dog friendly office- Petco discounts - friendly coworkers- based in san diego

Cons

TL;DR: Anytime I talk about this company, I find myself saying, “Well, nothing illegal is happening, but…”Leadership: Priorities constantly change with little consideration for the additional work created for employees. This was raised in a recent company-wide survey, but little has visibly changed. Frequent leadership turnover has also created a fear-based culture where leaders don’t always advocate for their teams and questioning decisions is discouraged.Culture: Employees often feel like assets to be optimized rather than people. There is a constant push to do more with less, with limited consideration for employee wellbeing or burnout.Retention: Layoffs, firings, reorganizations, and people quitting are common. The company highlights long-tenured employees, but those examples don’t feel representative of the broader employee experience. Job stability is difficult to feel confident about.Career growth: Getting promoted is extremely difficult. Strong performance alone isn’t enough—promotions require substantial additional justification. Career paths are also unclear, and getting concrete answers about what is required to advance can be challenging.RTO: Policies vary significantly by department and often feel like checking a box rather than encouraging collaboration. Many employees commute to the office just to spend their day on Zoom calls.Cost cutting: Cost cutting can be felt everywhere—from repeated layoffs to reduced employee benefits and perks. The cafeteria was replaced by mediocre food trucks, health insurance is not particularly competitive (salaries aren’t either), and employees regularly feel the effects of efforts to reduce costs.

Great people and culture with no notable downsides

Cons

can’t think of anything notable

Management quality varies greatly and affects experience

08/10/2026 - Overland Park, KS

Pros

08/06/2026 - Asheville, NC

Cons

Corporate Digital Marketing Team in Shambles

08/04/2026 - San Diego, CA

Pros

Nice office, friendly co-workers, pet-focused

Cons

I would strongly advise against taking a role within Petco's marketing organization at this time. Since a new SVP of Digital & Marketing joined, the culture of the team changed dramatically. Several talented coworkers were laid off, and the remaining employees were expected to absorb much of that work, leaving many people doing the jobs of two or three employees. In my experience, the new SVP came across as distant and unapproachable. I rarely saw efforts to engage with employees or build relationships with the team, and major decisions seemed to be driven almost entirely by cost-cutting. The impact those decisions had on employee morale, burnout, and retention did not appear to be a meaningful consideration.Petco has many talented people, but the environment within the marketing organization changed significantly. If you're looking for a workplace that invests in its employees and fosters a positive culture, I would look elsewhere.
