Great Culture - Still a Business
02/18/2025 - Seattle, WA
Pros
Great ERDs, supportive and inclusive overall. Nordstrom promotes individual voices, work life balance, and longevity with the company. Genuinely loved my time working there, especially the people!
Cons
Layoffs are real - even if you're up for a promotion. Business is business and for all that they love to celebrate longevity at the company, nothing is forever. Before leaving, layoffs and cutbacks meant managers and teams did not get all the support they truly needed. There is a lot of making do with less and more work for smaller teams.

Nordstrom
02/20/2025 - Braintree, MA
Pros
Starting with the pros, one of the biggest perks is the employee discount—if you love fashion, getting a nice price cut on clothes and accessories is definitely a win. Career growth is another strong point; Nordstrom has a reputation for promoting from within, so if you’re looking to move up, there are opportunities. The company culture is pretty positive too, with a strong emphasis on teamwork and customer service, which can make the work environment enjoyable.Nordstrom also invests in its people with solid training programs, which is helpful whether you’re new to retail or looking to sharpen your skills. For scheduling, there’s some flexibility, which can be great for students or anyone balancing other commitments. If you’re in a sales position, the commission structure can be a huge plus—high performers have the chance to earn well beyond their base pay. And for full-time employees, the benefits—like health insurance, retirement plans, and paid time off—are pretty competitive.
Cons
Now, on the cons side, the commission setup can be a double-edged sword. While it’s great when sales are booming, it also creates pressure to hit targets, which can be stressful. The hours can be irregular, especially during holidays or big sales events, so you might find yourself working evenings, weekends, or major holidays. Plus, being on your feet for long shifts is just part of retail—definitely something to consider. The competitive environment is another thing—friendly competition is fine, but sometimes it can get intense. On top of that, customer service challenges come with the territory; dealing with difficult shoppers or large returns isn’t always fun. And with commission roles, your income can vary depending on how busy the store is, which might not be ideal if you’re looking for consistent pay. Lastly, because retail tends to ramp up during peak seasons, maintaining a solid work-life balance can be tricky.
