Low Pay, High Stress

03/13/2025 - null

Pros

I was genuinely driven by management to deliver consistently excellent client service and that is by far the best experience I've taken from PNC. There is a solid culture of "client obsession" in the region where I worked, and it reflected in my client survey scores which made me very proud. Regional and branch management are sufficiently competent in their leadership to inspire strong client service in spite of the low pay. Insurance and PTO are great. I was rarely micromanaged. I was also lucky enough to work in a very wealthy location and got to meet some fascinating people.

Cons

The pay is pathetic, and after having spoken to numerous other former PNC employees (including those who worked at a very high level), this is the most common reason you'll find that people leave the company. Every day you will be under very high stress to sell products that hardly make you any money and deliver exceptional service to a demanding client base that expects absolute perfection at the drop of a hat. You'll seriously struggle to manage your own finances, and you'll feel disingenuous as you pretend to be an "expert" while advising clients each day. I consistently exceeded my quarterly sales goals, had stellar client survey scores, and still was unable to survive with my total compensation. Even the highest performing branch bankers make nothing compared to above average performers at the larger competitors. You'll deal with plenty of rude people and it'll be hard for you to shake the mentality of "I don't get paid enough to deal with this." Bankers can't get sponsorship to become FINRA licensed, and therefore are financially illiterate and can't get paid on investment sales besides a pitiful $35 referral bonus for a qualified investment appointment. The company will then do everything they can to restrict even those tiny payouts for you. The prioritized performance metrics for your annual reviews will change without you knowing. Opportunities for internal promotions or a division change are limited. My advice to those considering a branch banking job with PNC: go to Chase or BOA where you can make a living income as you progress into something better.
