Customer Satisfaction Comes Before Employee Dignity

Red Robin puts far too much weight on customer satisfaction metrics when evaluating servers.Servers are expected to encourage guests to sign up for and use the Royalty program. Customers can then complete surveys about their experience, and those surveys contribute to individual server performance scores.The scoring system is one of my biggest problems with working here. Customers are given options ranging from highly dissatisfied to highly satisfied, but only "highly satisfied" positively contributes to your score. A customer can select "satisfied," believing they are giving you a positive review, while the result can still negatively affect your overall performance score.These scores can have real consequences. Poor performance scores can lead to lengthy performance conversations, reduced shifts, write-ups, and potentially termination. This means a customer's subjective opinion can ultimately affect a server's hours and income.Customer feedback can absolutely be useful, but restaurant experiences involve much more than the server. Kitchen delays, food quality, staffing, company policies, promotions, and other factors outside a server's control can affect how a guest rates their experience.There is also too much emphasis on appeasing customers. Food may be remade or comped even when complaints are questionable, while disrespectful behavior toward servers can go unacknowledged. This can leave employees feeling that keeping the customer happy is more important than supporting the employee who is standing in front of them.Servers should be accountable for genuinely poor service. However, customer complaints and survey scores should be evaluated in context rather than automatically treated as objective measurements of employee performance.Working under a system where an unreasonable customer's review can potentially affect your schedule or employment is stressful and demoralizing.

Having a handheld order system that you can take orders on next to the table makes everything go much faster but has a BIG learning curveThe culture is good, people are always running your food and it really does feel more like a team than a lot of server jobs Ive workedYou can make good money on busy nights and sections are large / they are decently good about cutting too many servers

Management expects a lot from servers, which is understandable, but there is a lot of pressure on upsell and reviewsTips can be very random depending on day and time of dayA lot of the logistics are easier bc of Red Robin policy (using table-side ordering/others running food) but because of this you have much bigger sections
